My Story

Hi, I’m Kate McQuiggan.

In 2007, my children’s school was looking for volunteers to help grade one students who were struggling with reading. That’s how I began, as a parent volunteer. I received the training and began working with a six-year-old student four mornings a week. Within a few months, I knew I had found my passion. There is nothing so wonderful as when you watch the joy on a child’s face as he or she begins to be able to read. When the teacher who was overseeing the program had to go back to work in the classroom, I took over and ran the program for the next five years.

I began tutoring privately in 2010 and went back to school to get my Bachelor’s of Education in 2012. I did post-graduate training in the Orton-Gillingham Method at the Claremont School in Toronto.

I saw a presentation on SWI by Dr. Pete Bowers (WordWorks Literacy Centre) in 2018 and began training with him and Michel Mira-Rameau (Real Spelling).

I continued ongoing professional development in many areas of language literacy (see my Education, Credentials & Experience page) and gradually moved to a comprehensive approach to teaching and supporting students who are struggling with spelling, reading and writing.

I continue to tutor private students (K-12) while also expanding into teaching training and coaching. All my students have language learning differences and many of them have additional diagnoses such as ADHD and/or anxiety disorders.
