Teaching and Coaching Teachers

Once people have taken a few introductory courses in SWI, it can be a struggle to begin to integrate that new understanding into your teaching. The most common questions are: Where do I start? How do I introduce this to my students? What does a Word Inquiry lesson look like? What does a Word Inquiry lesson plan look like? And for some people: How does this fit with my OG training? Do I discard the OG approach or can I combine it with SWI?

For others, the questions begin develop a little further down the road, after they’ve been using SWI for a couple of years: What happens when my student can “peel” off the affixes but can’t read the base? How do I teach the grapheme-phoneme correspondences in an SWI lesson?

Having gone through that journey myself and worked closely with many colleagues at different points on that same path, I now work to help other teachers and tutors explore these questions and find their own answers. We meet in monthly discussion groups and I also provide individual coaching.
